Swedish diplomat dies following police inquiry into espionage allegations

A Swedish diplomat has reportedly died following a police interrogation related to espionage allegations, according to comments made by his lawyer on Friday.

On Sunday, the Swedish SAPO Security Services detained the diplomat, continuing their questioning until his release on Wednesday. He remained under investigation during this time, as confirmed by the prosecutor’s office.

“This morning, upon hearing the tragic news, my thoughts immediately went to his family,” said his attorney, Anton Strand, in a statement to Reuters.

Strand did not provide details about the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Police indicated to Daily Svenska Dougbradet that they have opened an inquiry into the death; however, they added that there’s no suspicion of criminal activity related to it.

The diplomat had denied any wrongdoing and had even lodged a complaint with authorities about how the situation was handled, according to his lawyer. Following his release, he sought medical care.

Public Broadcasting Station SVT indicated that SAPO is looking into possible connections between this incident and the recent resignations of national security advisors in the government.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry confirmed the death of an employee but chose not to elaborate on the situation further. “We can confirm the passing of a foreign service employee,” the ministry stated. “Out of respect for the family, we will not provide additional details.”
