Ukraine Commemorates Four Years Since Russian Invasion
On February 25, the Swedish military intercepted a drone believed to be Russian, approaching the French nuclear aircraft carrier stationed in Malmö. This incident unfolded during a significant NATO exercise.
The Charles de Gaulle, which is the flagship of the French Navy, had docked in southern Sweden as part of its mission known as “La Fayette 26.” This operation saw NATO naval forces converge in the Baltic Sea, amidst escalating tensions with Russia.
Reports indicate that the drone was launched from a Russian vessel nearby and headed toward the aircraft carrier before being detected by Swedish military forces.
The security breach has sparked concerns about increasing Russian drone activities near critical Western military sites.
Interestingly, while patrolling the Øresund Strait, a Swedish Navy ship came across what seemed to be an unmanned aircraft. This prompted Swedish operatives to implement electronic countermeasures that disrupted the drone’s control systems.
The Swedish military confirmed that it took measures to intercept the drone, stating that contact was subsequently lost.
As for the drone’s fate, it remains unclear whether it returned to the Russian ship or was intercepted, possibly ending up in the sea. Swedish Defense Minister Poul Jonsson commented, suggesting the drone likely originated from Russia, given the presence of a Russian warship nearby during the incident.
Colonel Guillaume Vernet, a spokesman for the French military general staff, indicated that the Swedish systems operated flawlessly, ensuring no interruption of activities aboard the Charles de Gaulle.
This incident coincided with heightened military activities, including Poland scrambling fighter jets following recent Russian attacks on Ukraine, further aggravating tensions in the region.
Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a warning, stating, “Our adversaries know how the situation will end if they resort to a ‘nuclear’ response.”
