Swiss authorities suspect that sparkling flares on wine bottles caused deadly bar fire.

Tragedy Strikes Swiss Ski Resort

Investigators in Switzerland announced on Friday that a deadly fire at a ski resort appears to have been triggered by a champagne bottle’s flame, which ignited close to the ceiling of a packed bar.

The fire erupted at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana as revelers celebrated New Year’s Eve, resulting in the deaths of 40 individuals and injuries to another 119, according to officials.

Axel Clavier, a 16-year-old from Paris, described the panic as he felt the air become thick while celebrating with friends. He managed to escape the flames early Thursday by forcing a window open with a table, but tragically, many of his companions did not survive, marking this as one of Switzerland’s most devastating incidents.

Authorities reported that numerous victims were young, mostly in their teens to mid-20s. Clavier expressed his anguish, noting that several friends were still unaccounted for hours after the fire.

In an outpouring of grief, people gathered to leave candles and flowers at a makeshift memorial near the bar. Hundreds also prayed for the victims at a local church.

Pope Leo conveyed his condolences via a telegram, asking for strength for those enduring physical and emotional pain.

Investigation Ongoing

Matthias Reynard, a government official, remarked about the remarkable solidarity demonstrated during the aftermath of the fire and credited ordinary citizens, especially young people, for their brave actions in the initial moments.

From Celebration to Chaos

Many were seen desperately trying to flee through a narrow exit as chaos ensued. One witness reported people shattering windows to escape, while frantic parents raced to the scene, fearing their children were trapped inside.

Gianni Campolo, a 19-year-old visiting the resort, rushed to assist emergency services after hearing from a friend who escaped. He described horrific scenes of the injured and trapped.

“I’ve seen terrible things, but this… it’s beyond words,” Campolo told reporters.

The severity of the burns has made identifying victims challenging, leaving families with the added burden of providing DNA samples. In some instances, personal belongings were obliterated.

Among the missing is Emanuele Galeppini, a 17-year-old Italian golfer with an impressive record. His family anxiously awaits confirmation while reports indicate he may have perished.

Casualties Include Italians

As of Friday, 13 Italians were reported injured, and six were still missing, including Galeppini, raising concerns in Italy regarding the incident’s impact.

A Popular Tourist Destination

Crans-Montana, situated in a picturesque skiing area, is a key destination for tourists. Local authorities have advised residents to exercise caution in the coming days to prevent additional accidents, as the medical resources are already heavily taxed.

Known for its high-altitude slopes and hosting elite skiing events, Crans-Montana is set to feature top racers before the upcoming Olympics. Additionally, the region celebrates its golf club’s prestigious events in the summer.
