Debate on Sex Separation in Sports Intensifies After Swiss Women’s Team’s Match
The conversation surrounding the separation of sports by sex gained momentum following a recent friendly match involving the Swiss women’s national soccer team.
The Swiss squad has garnered significant attention, largely thanks to Alisha Lehman—a 26-year-old forward whose social media presence is impressive. Playing for Juventus in Italy after her time in the UK, Lehman boasts 16.7 million followers on Instagram and another 12 million on TikTok.
Yet, despite her popularity, the Swiss team faced a tough match against the Under-15 Boys Academy of Austrian club FC Lucerne.
The boys showcased a commanding performance, which prompted comments online about the unequal effort displayed. One observer noted, “The boys didn’t even look like they were trying very hard.”
The game concluded with a score of 7-1 in favor of the Austrian youth team, stirring discussions across social media platforms.
According to sources, the match was supposed to be closed to the public, aimed at preparing for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 competition set for July. However, the outcome was shared online by one of the boys, leading to widespread attention.
A Swiss website noted that a video of the match had accumulated 70,000 views before it was pulled from TikTok, but not before the damage was done.
Swiss player Leila Wanderer expressed that, despite feeling exhausted after the match, the team is focused on optimal performance for the upcoming championship, which they see as a positive aspect.
Interestingly, she remarked that the loss was “not important,” emphasizing that they were more interested in testing their game principles.
The perspective of viewers was less forgiving, with many using the result to argue against mixed-gender competition. One user even expressed disbelief over the authenticity of the results.
Comments online reflected a mix of disbelief and humor, as one user pointed out, “Are you losing to the U15 boys? Bold move, Switzerland.”
Another humorous commentator quipped, “Equal pay for boys under 15!”—showcasing a blend of satire and commentary on gender dynamics in sports.
Footage circulating online highlights matches between women and boys, including a past encounter where the Swiss women’s team also fell short against a boys’ team, further fueling the discussion on this issue.
Historical context shows that this isn’t the first instance; other national teams have similarly faced defeats against young male squads in previous years.
