Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone broke the world record in the women’s 400-meter hurdles on Thursday in Paris, giving the United States its second consecutive Olympic gold medal.
McLaughlin-Levrone, of New Brunswick, New Jersey, clocked 50.37 seconds in the final to break her own world record and record for the sixth time, having broken the 400-meter hurdles world record for the fifth time since June 2021 earlier this summer.
She set a world record of 50.65 seconds and won the gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

McLaughlin-Levrone has a long-standing rivalry with Boll, who in June became the only athlete to break the 51-second barrier in the women’s 400m hurdles.
“I think it’s really interesting to think about how to improve on history,” McLaughlin-Levrone said at the Olympic Trials.

McLoughlin-Lavron typically prefers to conserve her energy for the world championships, and she previously accepted the challenge of taking a year off from the 400m hurdles to focus on the open 400 for the first time in her career.
McLaughlin-Levrone has been one of the rising stars of American track and field since her mid-teens. At age 15, McLaughlin was the 2015 World Youth Champion. In 2016, she placed third at the U.S. Olympic Trials, becoming the youngest athlete to be selected to the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team since Denian Howard in 1980. Her current under-18 world record is 54.15 seconds.
