Sydney Sweeney Discusses Sexualization in Hollywood

Sydney Sweeney recently shared her thoughts on being sexualized in the entertainment industry. During her appearance on SiriusXM’s “The Julia Cunningham Show” on October 28, the 28-year-old actress reflected on her experiences while discussing her role as a pregnant nun in the upcoming horror film “Immaculate.” The host mentioned a review that criticized Sweeney’s character for always wearing a wet white shirt, which prompted a reaction about the nature of the film.

“I’ve been dealing with this since ‘Euphoria,’ so I’ve sort of gotten used to it,” Sweeney remarked. When asked if her role in “Euphoria” led to a perception of sexuality in all her roles, she considered the impact of the show on her career.

She conveyed, “Cassie was a significant character in pop culture, and ‘Euphoria’ really showcased me to a wider audience. People find it challenging to separate the actor from the character, especially one like Cassie.”

This inability to distinguish between actor and character, she noted, creates a unique dynamic. Interestingly, Sweeney mentioned that even her own siblings have begun to communicate using memes based on her roles. She emphasized how each character she’s played since “Euphoria” has challenged audiences’ expectations, citing works like “Reality,” “Christie,” “Americana,” and “Eden.” “I think it’s all part of my growth as an actress,” she said.

In her latest project, “Christy,” she portrays real-life professional boxer Christy Martin, further highlighting the varied roles she has embraced. During her appearance, she also shared her thoughts on receiving an award for her advocacy work at Variety’s Power of Women event on October 29. Sweeney dedicated the accolade to Martin, expressing empathy towards Martin’s struggles.

“I understand what it feels like to be undervalued and to have others define you before you define yourself,” Sweeney reflected. She likened this to the experiences many face in their own lives, recognizing that strength often lies in resilience.

At the Power of Women event, Sweeney made a striking impression wearing a sheer silver dress. Sharon Stone, her co-star from “Euphoria,” supported Sweeney’s bold fashion choice, encouraging her to embrace her femininity. Stone remarked, “It’s okay to use what your mom gave you,” highlighting the importance of confidence in one’s appearance.

In conclusion, Sweeney’s candidness about her experiences sheds light on the broader conversation surrounding the portrayal of women in Hollywood. While she faces challenges in being viewed beyond her roles, her journey signifies resilience and an ongoing effort to redefine perceptions.
