Controversy Surrounds American Eagle Ad Featuring Sidney Sweeney

Another wave of outrage has hit the left side of TikTok due to a recent American Eagle advertisement featuring actress Sidney Sweeney. The campaign includes a tongue-in-cheek nod to “good jeans,” which some TikTok users claim resembles Nazi propaganda.

The phrase “Good Jeans” cleverly plays on “Good Genes.” In the ads, Sweeney is shown wearing American Eagle jeans while chatting about this play on words. “The genes are passed on from parents and can determine traits like hair color and eye color. My jeans are blue,” she shares in one of the segments.

Interestingly, she clarifies that the ads aren’t meant to push for purchases: “I’m not saying you should buy American Eagle jeans. They aren’t claiming to be the most comfortable jeans I’ve worn. But if you want to buy them, that’s up to you.” It seems like an effort to maintain some level of distance from purely commercial intent.

In the ad, there’s a mention of “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” followed by a male narrator’s voice. Some on the left perceive the advertisement as endorsing eugenics, with one TikTok user waving a transgender flag in the background saying, “Should we really be surprised that a company like this promotes fascist ideas?”

She further pointed out the “white woman with blue eyes and blonde hair” discussing good genes and likened it to Nazi propaganda. It seems the ad is indeed stirring quite the debate.

Aaron McIntier, an executive producer for “Steve Deace Show,” commented, “It’s a sensual campaign, very heterosexual. American Eagle’s market valuation even hit $200 million because of it.” He added that certain groups seem irked by the portrayal of “objectively attractive white women” in marketing.

The underlying sentiment is clear: if a brand highlights such women in their marketing, it’s suddenly labeled as Nazi propaganda, which seems like quite an overreaction, doesn’t it?
