Sylvester Stallone Reflects on Hollywood Today

Sylvester Stallone expressed that if he were launching his career in today’s Hollywood, he would find himself in “big trouble.” In a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning’s Tracy Smith, Stallone shared his thoughts on the evolution of the industry since his rise to fame over 50 years ago.

He noted, “No. It’s a whole different mindset. The actors look different, they act different. The subject matter, I couldn’t relate to.” Stallone feels that the landscape has changed so much that he wouldn’t connect with the current trends or expectations.

During the conversation, Stallone made an interesting comparison to the classic 1972 film, “The Godfather,” saying, “If you were going to make ‘The Godfather’ today… try casting it.” It’s clear he feels that the approach to storytelling and character casting has shifted dramatically.

When discussing his own success with the film “Rocky,” he humorously suggested he might have ended up in a very different life if it hadn’t hit big: “I would have been in a cell somewhere… or in husbandry with horses and animals. I was about the same intelligence as a horse.” This light-hearted self-appraisal shows how he truly felt connected to animals, perhaps more than he did to the Hollywood scene back then.

“Rocky” turned into a massive hit after its release in 1976, grossing over $225 million and securing an Academy Award for best picture, establishing Stallone as a leading action star. He shared that the driving force behind his perseverance and success has always been guided by what he calls “Murphy’s Law,” suggesting that he stays wary of what can go wrong.

An example of this principle in action? Stallone shared that he walks the route to the fire escape in whatever hotel he stays at with his wife, Jennifer Flavin, just to be prepared for anything, saying he needs to know the steps to safety.

Stallone and Flavin, who married in 1997 after meeting in 1988, have three daughters: Sophia, Sistine, and Scarlet. They faced a brief split in 2022 but reconciled shortly after, demonstrating a commitment to their family.

Preparing for the release of his memoir, “The Steps,” Stallone expressed that the most crucial step of his life has always been the first one – the decision to commit fully to his path. “It’s the journey of life,” he added, reflecting on his experiences and the lessons learned along the way.
