Syracuse coach addresses criticism from Greg Olsen following postgame sprints

Fran Brown’s recent coaching methods sparked some debate, especially following a comment from Greg Olsen. Despite this, the Syracuse coach seems unconcerned about any backlash.

After a close win against UConn on September 6, where Syracuse triumphed 27-20 in overtime, Brown wasn’t pleased with the team’s performance. While the fans were still in the JMA Wireless Dome, he scolded his players and ran a sprint on the field.

The statistics didn’t look great, either. Syracuse gave up 154 yards and fumbled while trailing 7-0 at halftime, failing to score a touchdown until the fourth quarter.

Olsen, discussing the situation on “Wake Up Bar Stool,” suggested that Brown’s punishment was excessive and labeled it more as “performance.”

He shared, “I feel like I’m performing. Accountability is essential. It’s alright to confront players if they’re not meeting expectations. I believe Fran is making positive strides in building Syracuse’s football culture.”

However, he added, “There’s definitely a time and place for it.”

On Wednesday, Brown responded to Olsen’s remarks during a Syracuse Athletics session. He highlighted some disciplinary actions that don’t apply strictly to what happens within the stadium. “I don’t really know Greg Olsen, to be honest. He was a good player. But I have my approach. After seeing the fans there, it’s just different,” Brown explained.

He mentioned certain things that can’t be overlooked, particularly when driving home his coaching philosophy. “I can’t force one-on-one interactions if they’re not onboard,” he remarked.

Known for his distinctive style, Brown has some unconventional rules, such as forgoing a shower after losses. Last season was successful; he led Syracuse to a 10-3 record and a win at the Washington State Holiday Bowl.

This year, Syracuse has kicked off the season with a split record of 1-1, following a 45-26 loss to Tennessee. They are set to compete against Colgate on Friday at 7 PM.
