Tragic Fire Claims Life of Syracuse University Senior
A close-knit sorority sister, just months shy of her graduation from Syracuse University, sadly lost her life in a house fire on Christmas Eve.
Kayla Corrigan, 21, was visiting her parents in Needham, Massachusetts, about 25 miles from Boston, when a fire began around 5 a.m. Wednesday. It reportedly started in the garage, as per officials.
“Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames engulfing a three-story home,” fire authorities noted.
“First responders tried to get in, but the flames forced them back. The fire spread rapidly, leading to significant destruction.”
While two adults managed to escape, Mr. Corrigan did not make it out and was later found inside the burnt remnants of the home.
The intensity of the blaze resulted in four alarms being triggered, with about 75 firefighters working for over seven hours to control it.
Investigators have identified various potential sources of heat in the vicinity, all believed to be accidental. However, the exact cause remains undetermined.
“Such tragedies tend to occur more frequently in winter months,” commented State Fire Marshal John M. Davin.
Needham Fire Chief Thomas Conroy expressed continued support for the family since the morning of the fire.
Syracuse University communicated news of Corrigan’s passing in an email to students and faculty shortly thereafter.
She was studying marketing management at the Whitman School of Management, according to university officials.
“Kayla dedicated herself to her internship, gaining insights into marketing within a changing global context,” remarked Allen Groves, the executive vice president and chief student experience officer.
Counseling resources were encouraged for students impacted by her loss.
A cherished member of Sigma Delta Tau, her sorority friends remembered her as possessing a “beautiful presence” and an incredibly kind heart.
“Everyone who knew her appreciated her warmth, humor, and selfless nature,” her sorority shared.
“Kayla will always have a special place in our hearts and will be profoundly missed.”
Following her passing, a GoFundMe was initiated, portraying the college senior as a “beloved sister and daughter.”
The organizers expressed, “No words can capture the depth of our sorrow and the shock of our loss. Her absence has left an unfillable void.”
They also highlighted that the fire not only took Mr. Corrigan’s life but also obliterated the family’s home and possessions, resulting in emotional and financial turmoil.
“Their lives changed in a heartbeat,” they wrote.
By Tuesday morning, the GoFundMe had raised over $180,000, with contributions flooding in from sororities, fraternities, and the men’s hockey team at Syracuse University.
