Syrian Arrested After Stabbing Near Berlin Holocaust Memorial

Syrian asylum seekers reportedly stabbed a Spanish tourist near the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, Germany on Friday evening.

Update 1300: According to Berlin police, the suspected attacker has a history of anti-Semitism, and “according to current knowledge, the plan to kill the Jews has developed him for several weeks.” In addition to being arrested for a knife, the 19-year-old Syrian asylum seeker was found on a paper with poems from the Quran, Islamic texts, and a prayer rug in his backpack. Police revealed the motive for the attack in a statement. He was said to have come to Germany as a refugee in 2023 and was later granted asylum within the country.

In Germany's latest obvious Muslim attack, a 30-year-old tourist from Spain was stabbed in the neck around 6pm between the Holocaust Memorial and the US Embassy in Berlin's Mitte district.

Investigators treat the attack as a “politically motivated crime,” according to the report.

German broadcasting station NTV Report The suspect had no identification documents at the time of arrest and was “slightly covered.”

The broadcaster said the state criminal police station 8, which is responsible for handling Islamic terrorist incidents, had been brought into the investigation.

The 30-year-old Spanish victim is reportedly in stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery.

The attack is set to head to polls on Sunday in a critical federal election where issues of mass migration and Islamic terrorism have become central focus.
