Yankees’ Mark Leiter Jr. sees encouraging signs despite home run issues
Mark Leiter Jr. knows what's expected of him after coming to the team in a deadline trade, and he knows many of his pitches are going to waste on the stands — he gave up just two homers in 39 games with the Cubs this season, and five in his first 16 games with the […]
Juan Soto launches go-ahead Yankees homer after injury scare
With one dramatic move, Juan Soto turned uncertainty into mayhem. Minutes after appearing to be in severe pain after being hit by a foul ball in the leg, Soto hit a two-run homer to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead against the Royals on Wednesday in the Bronx. Juan Soto reacts after hitting a two-run […]
Yankees’ Nestor Cortes strikes different tune on bullpen role
Nestor Cortes has returned to the starting rotation, at least for now, but added that he would be open to pitching as a relief pitcher in the postseason. The left-hander, who took the mound in place of Clark Schmidt on Saturday and pitched 4 1/3 hitless innings against the Cubs to earn the win and […]
Yankees bats suffocated by Seth Lugo in loss to Royals
The Yankees at least avoided the ignominy of a perfect game. But that was pretty much all they got on a night when they couldn't reach second base. Former Mets pitcher Seth Lugo pitched a flawless game, out-throwing the Yankees for seven scoreless innings and leading the Royals to a 5-0 victory Tuesday night in […]
Royals’ Seth Lugo looms as potentially dangerous matchup for Yankees
There is a realistic scenario in which this Yankees-Royals series could be replayed in early October. The clearest path would be for the Orioles to overtake the Yankees in the AL East while the Royals fail to overtake the Guardians, forcing the teams to meet in a fourth-vs. fifth-place wild-card series. Or maybe the Yankees […]
Aaron Boone ‘comfortable’ if Yankees continue to not employ true closer in postseason
When the Yankees start the playoffs next month, they may not have a true closer, and, at least for now, Aaron Boone seems content with that. Last week, Clay Holmes' 11th save was a blow to Boone, who was “creative” with his pitching plans late in games, but Luke Weaver earned his first save. Holmes […]
Marcus Stroman building Yankees playoff case despite ‘a couple mistakes’
The results suggested some progress, at least on paper. He pitched well in all but one of his starts in August, and in his most recent start, where he was unable to complete the fourth inning, he returned to his usual Marcus Stroman-like form, which was unusual for his late-season performance. This time, against the […]
Yankees’ Austin Wells pushing himself in Rookie of the Year race
Earlier this season, the Yankees appeared to have the front-runner for AL Rookie of the Year in Luis Gil. With the race heading into the final stages, Austin Wells is making a strong case for taking home the prize himself. As the Yankees focus on bigger goals this month, such as winning the AL East, […]
Anthony Rizzo’s hard contact an encouraging Yankees sign
The Yankees opted to add a high-potential fillip to their troubled left field corps by promoting Jason Dominguez and mostly dropping Alex Verdugo. There is no such potential cure at first base. Without DJ LeMahieu on the disabled list, the Yankees' only backup is Oswaldo Cabrera. Ben Rice has faded in the major leagues, going […]
