Taking on ‘the Firm’: Why I’m backing Rick Scott for GOP leader

On Tuesday night, I hosted and moderated a forum for Republican senators, giving my colleagues the opportunity to hear from each of the three candidates running to replace Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). Gave. After listening to each candidate's opinions, I decided to support Rick Scott (R-Florida). Here are my takeaways.

As I have been saying for months, the Senate is supposed to be the “world's greatest deliberative body,” but in recent years it has That function has stopped. All other senators.

Rick Scott has consistently criticized Senate Republican leaders for abusing their positions — even when it's difficult and sometimes politically costly for him.

Senators should have ample opportunity to debate, debate, and amend important legislation, and Senate rules provide important procedural protections to ensure such an outcome. . These rules have been short-circuited by leaders of both parties, and I sometimes refer to them (in the current configuration of Congress) as “the law firm of Schumer, McConnell, Johnson, and Jeffries,” or simply “the law firm.” It gives authority to things.

The company's vast power is good for the company, its members, and its small group of lobbyists and staffers, but it's bad for the Senate as a whole, and it's especially bad for the American people.

To that end, I would like to present to those running for the next Senate Republican leadership a set of guidelines aimed at restoring the rules, customs, and practices that helped give the Senate its (now inaccurate) title in the past. We are calling on you to agree to the reforms. “The world's largest deliberative body.”

While I personally like and consider all three leadership candidates to be friends, each with unique skills, experiences, and plans that could serve the Senate and the American people, Rick Scott stands out as a reform-minded person. candidate.

Rick Scott offers the most concrete and aggressive plan to restore the Senate's most time-honored traditions, rooted in the Senate's rules. And he embraced many of these reforms long before this campaign began, reflected in his votes and advocacy within the conference.

Mr. Scott 1) protects the ability of individual senators to convene and suspend amendments, and 2) the Senate passes spending bills that most senators literally have no meaningful opportunity to amend. He proposed a concrete plan to reform the currently barbaric methods. Or he could read and debate spending bills that the company negotiated in secret, and 3) otherwise ensure that the Senate Republican leader works for the people who elected him, not the other way around. I guarantee that.

Mr. Scott's approach is also most closely aligned and focused on helping President Trump enact legislative policies that are supported by more than 75 million American voters.

With this in mind, I wholeheartedly support Rick Scott and respectfully encourage my colleagues, especially those who agree that bold reforms are desperately needed, to do the same.

All three candidates provided useful perspectives on how a conference should be run, and we found the overall discussion refreshing and productive. But Scott's approach stands out and that's why I'm voting for him.

Rick Scott has consistently criticized Senate Republican leaders for abusing their positions — even when it's difficult and sometimes politically costly for him. This is another reason to support him.
