The Vikings seem to be considering a potential backup plan for JJ McCarthy next season.
Rumors have emerged, notably from Pro Football Talk, suggesting that the Vikings might pursue a trade for 49ers quarterback Mac Jones during the offseason.
A big part of this decision hinges on whether the 49ers view Brock Purdy as their long-term starter. However, it’s also feasible that the 49ers could keep both quarterbacks on their roster through the 2026 season.
There have been indications from the 49ers that moving Jones might be beneficial after this season.
Jones joined San Francisco on a two-year deal worth $8.4 million this past offseason.
A commentator noted that despite Jones’s recent contract, there seems to be an understanding that the 49ers might seek to replace him after witnessing his solid performance in eight games, filling in for Purdy.
While it could be a luxury for the 49ers to have two starting-caliber quarterbacks, it’s suggested that trading Jones for the best offer could make more sense, especially considering the overall shortage of quality quarterbacks in the league.
For the Vikings, adding a seasoned quarterback behind McCarthy might be advantageous. The rookie, selected with the 10th overall pick, has had a rocky start—going 2-3 as a starter and completing under 53% of his passes this season.
In contrast, Jones has performed well, winning five out of eight starts for the 49ers and throwing for 2,151 yards with 13 touchdowns this season during Purdy’s absence.
