Tanker truck explodes on Texas highway leaving several critically injured

Two people were seriously injured Sunday when a tanker truck exploded on a busy highway near Giddings, Texas.

The explosion happened Sunday afternoon on U.S. 290 east of Giddings, about an hour east of Austin.

Emergency crews from multiple agencies were quickly on the scene, not only fighting the fire and rescuing the seriously injured, but also providing assistance and backup.

Lee County EMS paramedics responded quickly and transported two seriously injured patients to a hospital in Austin, according to a Lee County EMS Facebook post.

Agencies responded to the blaze, including Giddings, Lincoln and South Lee County fire departments, the Giddings Police Department, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety and Fayette County EMS.

As a result of the explosion, authorities closed the highway and diverted traffic around the site.
