Jets Struggling as NFL Regular Season Wraps Up
The Jets are heading into the final weekend of the NFL regular season with a lackluster offensive performance, ranking 28th in both total yards and points scored per game.
It’s been quite the season, to say the least. Tanner Engstrand, in his first year as offensive coordinator, shared his thoughts on the ups and downs he’s encountered. “We’ve had some high points and some low points,” he reflected. “There were definitely some positives and also things we can learn from. Personally, it feels like a moment to reflect on the last few weeks—maybe we’ll adjust how we approach things moving forward. Overall, it’s been pretty solid. I believe our system is in place, but there’s always room for growth. I think we’ve laid a decent foundation to build our team culture and really define how we want to play.”
Looking ahead, Engstrand is likely to return next season alongside head coach Aaron Glenn. If the Jets opt to draft a rookie quarterback early in the draft, Engstrand may find himself in a position to coach that player. Notably, the trio of quarterbacks—Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and Brady Cook—have all faced challenges this season under his direction.
In recent games, the Jets have struggled to score, tallying 10 points or fewer in three out of their last four matchups. Engstrand emphasized that the focus now has to be on increasing offensive production. “Our main goal is to find ways to put more points on the board,” he said. “We haven’t concentrated enough on that lately, so that’s really been the priority in our practice and planning.”
In terms of player status, running back Breece Hall (knee) sat out of Wednesday’s practice and only participated in a limited capacity on Thursday. Guard Joe Tippman (hip) was back, though also in a limited role. Meanwhile, defensive end Michael Clemons (ankle), running back Isaiah Davis (concussion), offensive lineman Xavier Newman (knee), cornerback Quantez Stigers (knee), tight end Mason Taylor (neck), and tight end Jelani Woods (hamstring) all missed practice. Quarterback Taylor (knee) is reaching his limit as well.
