Tariq Skubal Addresses Trade Rumors

Tariq Skubal shared that he doesn’t really stress about trade rumors surrounding him, but he is definitely curious about why his name keeps popping up.

In a recent chat on “Foul Territory,” the 29-year-old pitcher discussed the ongoing trade speculation that has enveloped him this offseason, admitting it’s “hard not to see” these discussions on social media platforms.

“At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter,” Skubal noted. “It doesn’t change how I work out or throw, or how I prepare for the next season.”

He went on to express some bewilderment about the situation, saying, “It’s like, why am I even in this conversation if I’m not looking to get traded?”

Skubal understands that the decision lies outside his control, emphasizing that ideally, he wouldn’t want to leave Detroit.

“It’s all out of my control… It’s not that I don’t want to be traded, so like, why am I even in this conversation?” he reflected. “Ultimately, it doesn’t affect what I do on a daily basis.”

He explained that he’s learned to distance himself from the noise, which has helped him manage this kind of speculation over the years.

In October, reports indicated that Skubal, who recently secured his second consecutive Cy Young Award, faced a significant gap in contract negotiations, nearly $250 million apart.

With the two-time All-Star set to hit free agency after next season, expectations are that he may command around $400 million. Last season, he had an impressive performance, starting 31 games, pitching 195 1/3 innings, achieving a 13-6 record, and boasting a 2.21 ERA—best in the American League. Notably, he led the majors with a 0.89 WHIP.

Though his future with the Tigers remains uncertain, the Mets have emerged as a potential destination, with reports suggesting team officials have already started talks regarding Skubal.
