Exciting Sunday Night for the Tigers
Your Sunday night might have felt a bit different with the Minnesota Twins not facing Tarik Skubal. This marked the Tigers’ first time hosting ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball since 2017, back when they had Miguel Cabrera leading the team and making headlines.
Skubal did not disappoint the packed crowd. He pitched exceptionally well, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out an impressive 13 batters over seven shutout innings. It was a dominant performance that really set the tone for the game.
Right from the start, Skubal was in control, hitting superstar Byron Buxton on just his fifth pitch. After a flyout, he faced Carlos Correa, finding himself in a 3-0 count. But then, he threw three outstanding strikes, showcasing both skill and eagerness to leave the mound with energy.
He continued his streak, striking out the next six batters he faced. Over the first three innings, he had an incredible eight strikeouts against just nine batters, really putting pressure on the Twins’ lineup.
Detroit didn’t just rely on Skubal; they also contributed offensively. Kelly Carpenter and Riley Green hit solo home runs in the first and fourth innings, respectively. Carpenter later added an RBI triple before leaving the game due to a recurring hamstring issue.
Manager AJ Hinch eventually pulled Skubal after he threw a fastball reaching 100 miles per hour for his 93rd pitch, marking his 13th strikeout of the evening.
This performance made Skubal the first pitcher in Tigers’ history to record 13 strikeouts in a game while allowing only 13 hits. He joined a select group of greats like Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander as the only Tigers to win 10 consecutive decisions over the last four decades.
Additionally, he matched the accomplishments of renowned pitchers like Randy Johnson, Sandy Koufax, and Chris Sale, being one of the few left-handed pitchers to have multiple starts in a season with at least 13 strikeouts without allowing any runs or more than two hits.
As the Tigers aim for their first World Series win since 1984, they currently hold one of the best records in Major League Baseball, tied with the Dodgers at 53-32.
