Task force on Trump assassination attempts set to hold hearing next week

The House Select Committee investigating the assassination attempt on former President Trump First hearing Thursday, September 26th.

The hearing is expected to focus on “the Secret Service's reliance on state and local law enforcement” in the July shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a gunman opened fire on the former president, killing one person and wounding two others.

The bipartisan task force, spearheaded by Chairman Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Ranking Committee Member Jason Crow (D-CO), will expand its scope of work following a second threat to President Trump's life.

Authorities said on Sunday that Trump was playing a few holes away at a Florida golf course when they noticed a rifle barrel protruding from the edge of the course. A Secret Service agent fired at the man, who dropped the rifle and ran away. Authorities later arrested the suspect.

After the second incident, the task force said it had asked the Secret Service for an explanation, and it had also sent letters to the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security requesting explanations and documentation.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said lawmakers would investigate the second shooting in Pennsylvania as well as the first.

Task force leaders face time pressure: They must deliver their final report by a Dec. 13 deadline, forcing them to work at a much faster pace than a typical congressional investigation.

Lawmakers will be on vacation in October before the election, adding another obstacle to the condensed schedule.

No witnesses have yet been announced for Thursday's hearing.
