Christian Artist Tauren Wells Reflects on Connection with Steph Curry
Christian musician Tauren Wells reminisces about the moment he first learned of NBA superstar Steph Curry. It was April 2019, during the University of Virginia’s win in the NCAA Tournament Championship, when Curry’s coach, Tony Bennett, mentioned that Wells’ song, Hills and Valleys, inspired the team. This revelation lifted Wells’ spirits significantly.
After seeing Bennett’s comments on CBS, he shared them on Instagram and went to bed. The following morning, he noticed a comment from Curry’s official account, where Curry expressed his appreciation for Wells’ music, mentioning that he played Hills and Valleys after the birth of his child. “I felt like an eighth grader who’d just been noticed by a girl,” Wells mused, laughing at the memory.
For a while, he stayed quiet about it, but eventually, he reached out. They connected, and Curry even shared his number, which allowed them to stay in touch. “It was really nice,” Wells recalled, describing a friendship that has flourished over the years.
Since that pivotal moment, Wells has released three studio albums, including his latest, Let the Church Sing. Additionally, he and his wife, Lorna, have planted the Whitestone Church and are currently working on a book titled Joy Bomb: Unleash Jesus’ Explosive Joy for Extraordinary Life, with Curry’s support.
Wells extended an invitation to Curry for one of his shows, and although Curry couldn’t make it due to an injury, he expressed interest in attending in the future. Wells appreciated Curry’s genuine nature, noting how he brings out the best in others. “Steph has this way of making you forget about yourself,” Wells said, emphasizing the athlete’s humble approach to his platform and influence.
In his upcoming book, Wells aims to help readers rediscover the joy that Jesus offers. He emphasized how Jesus’ first recorded sermon began with the word “blessed.” “If this was the first message Jesus chose to convey, how essential must happiness be in God’s heart?” he pondered, hoping to clarify the meanings of joy and happiness through his work.
