Taxpayer-funded ID program for illegal immigrants expected to begin this summer

Fox’s first appearance: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) aims to roll out a controversial ID card pilot program in the summer for illegal immigrants being released into the United States. The agency hopes it will modernize the documentation process for deportation proceedings.

The ICE Secure Docket Card program was first reported in 2022, and Fox Digital obtained images of the card last year. Currently, ICE is planning a limited rollout of the program.

ICE confirmed to Fox News Digital this week that the pilot program will begin this summer and approximately 10,000 cards will be distributed. The agency stressed that the plan is “undecided” and could still change, but the cards are expected to be issued in three or four locations in the United States.

A person familiar with the show said Fox Houston and Atlanta are two potential locations.

The agency said the program “updates the documentation provided to some noncitizens,” but stressed that it is not an official form of federal identification.

“While card details and pilots are in development, it is important to note that the secure card is not an official form of federal identification,” the agency said. “The secure card indicates that it will be used by a DHS agency and will only be provided after a national security background check is conducted.”

When illegal immigrants cross borders and are released into the interior, they are often given a number of paper documents depending on their status and circumstances. ICE says such documents pose security risks and can be lost or deteriorated, and the new program will improve the agency’s efficiency.

It will also make it easier for authorities to verify your identity through the DHS system.

“By moving to secure cards, the agency will save millions of dollars, free up resources, and give DHS employees faster access to information while reducing the agency’s FOIA backlog. “We can do that,” the spokesperson said. “For provisionally released noncitizens, digital modernization provides continued access to important immigration documents through secure cards and connected portals.”

But the move is expected to face opposition from some Republicans and conservatives, who have expressed widespread concern about the routine release of illegal immigrants and say it is an “invasion” orchestrated by the federal government. .

RJ Howman, director of the National Immigration Enforcement Center (NICE) and visiting fellow at the Heritage Foundation, told Fox News: “Just in time for an election, the Biden administration is quietly justifying a government-sanctioned invasion of our country.” he said. Digital.

“Providing identity documents to illegal immigrants will undoubtedly lead to obtaining other documents, benefits, rights, or even creating an entirely new identity. After all, border crossers Most of them don’t have identification. So how do we know who they are? “

Republicans advanced a bill Wednesday that would add a citizenship question to the census to prevent noncitizens from being counted in Congress’ apportionments. Republicans had previously passed a sweeping border security bill that would have cut off releases into the United States, blaming the Biden administration’s policies for the crisis.
