Carolina Panthers Face Challenges Ahead of New Season
For the first time in a decade, the Carolina Panthers have claimed the top spot in the NFC South. Their impressive season concluded in January, where they nearly overcame Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams during the Wild Card Game at home.
As they head into 2026 with heightened expectations—especially after exercising Bryce Young’s fifth-year option and making several key roster additions—there’s a cloud looming over the team’s offense. It faced another setback recently with the news that they will start the regular season without Taylor Morton, their veteran right tackle.
Morton, who is 31, will be out due to complications related to a blood clot found in his left lung. This diagnosis came to light in late June, and the team confirmed on Tuesday that he won’t be available for the season’s start.
This development is particularly concerning as starting left tackle Ikem Ekwonu is still in recovery mode from a torn patella tendon in his right knee. Ekwonu sustained this injury during the Panthers’ playoff matchup.
In August of last year, Ekwonu underwent emergency surgery for an appendicitis. Now, with Morton placed on the non-football injured list, he joins two-time Pro Bowl defensive back Jaycee Horn, who also recently faced injury issues. Horn missed a game against the San Francisco 49ers last season but managed to play in 16 games overall. He’s currently on the non-football injury list after cutting his foot while running.
After Morton’s diagnosis, he was prescribed blood thinners, and his recovery has reportedly been progressing well, with ongoing monitoring by the team’s medical staff.
With Morton out, there’s a void on the right side of the offensive line. The Panthers are addressing their needs—having already signed veteran tackle Rasheed Walker in March, potentially to cover for Ekwonu. Further, they utilized their first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on Monroe Freeling, another candidate for offensive line support.
Morton has been with the Panthers since they selected him in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, having dedicated all nine of his NFL seasons to the team. As the Panthers look ahead, the upcoming challenges will test their depth and resilience on the offensive front.
