You might have caught the viral video of Taylor Swift celebrating Travis Kelce’s touchdown catch from Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. This marked Travis’s first touchdown of the season and the first since their wedding in July.
Since the start of their relationship, NFL broadcasters have made it a point to showcase her reactions during the games. This past Sunday was no exception. After Travis scored, cameras quickly panned to Taylor, who jumped up, pointed to her wedding ring, and exclaimed, “That’s my husband!” The online reaction was explosive.
An account ironically named Shiny Happy Person (@HRH_SHP) expressed criticism of Taylor’s exuberance.
“She’s a middle-aged woman acting like a child. Everything about her screams high school, and this isn’t the only example. It’s like she got stuck there, in the bleachers, yelling ‘that’s my man’ while everyone around her cringes,” she remarked.
Upon checking SHP’s profile, I assumed she would be a staunch feminist, likely single and without children. However, her bio identifies her as a “MAGA Republican,” and she is actually a married mother. How can someone with such traditional views resent Taylor for promoting supportive marital dynamics more than anything from the right in years?
You don’t need to be a Swiftie to appreciate her impact on marriage. I’ve had my share of frustrations with Taylor since before it was trendy among conservatives. Not to sidetrack, but I was just a girl when she transitioned from country to pop. As a lifelong country music fan, I still find it hard to forgive that shift.
That said, she’s experienced a kind of redemption lately. When she began dating Travis, I held on to the hope that it would inspire a cultural change where traditional values like monogamy, marriage, and parenthood became more desirable again. While the right pushes for a return to these ideals, without mainstream media’s endorsement, it’s often an uphill battle. It’s challenging to convince young women to settle down when society constantly promotes alternative lifestyles.
Then enters Taylor, making her affection for Travis no secret. She attends his games, publicly supports him, and rushes to embrace him after her performances. This is exactly what the right has been longing for, but it’s surprising coming from her, as she doesn’t align with conservative views. Yet, her public admiration for a strong, athletic man, rather than a more stereotypical liberal figure, offers a significant message.
She sends a clear signal to many young women: it’s perfectly okay to seek out strong partners. That settling down, marrying, and envisioning a future with children is a valid, fulfilling aspiration.
When she pointed to her ring and shouted, “That’s my husband!” I couldn’t help but think it exemplified how a wife should support her husband. Our culture has become so focused on critiquing men that it seems more usual for a wife to mock or downplay her husband’s achievements than to proudly celebrate them.
There’s a common perception that men lack emotions, but anyone who’s been married knows that’s far from true. Men just express their feelings differently. I’ve noticed that when a man loves deeply—whether it’s a father, brother, or husband—his emotional well-being often hinges on how the women around him perceive him. Do they show him love, respect, and appreciation for what he does?
Men who feel genuinely cherished by their wives tend to be more driven and successful. They invest in the marriage and family life. They are motivated to provide for their loved ones and will go the extra mile to ensure their happiness. They appreciate when we acknowledge their efforts, even in small ways like pointing to our ring to affirm our bond. Not everyone will end up married to a famous NFL player, but that doesn’t diminish the importance of their achievements.
I remember a time when my husband closed a significant deal after months of hard work, while I was wrapped up in the busy world of parenting. I could have managed a simple acknowledgment, but I realized if I wanted him to feel valued, he deserved my full effort. So, despite being exhausted, I cleaned the house meticulously, got everyone ready, and bought a bottle of champagne that we couldn’t really afford. When he arrived home, he found a festively decorated space, his favorite meal prepared, and our daughters rushing to greet him like a hero.
He keeps that champagne bottle on his office shelf, a constant reminder of what he fights for daily. Whenever he’s on a video call, it’s visible in the corner of the frame.
My life feels significantly more joyful and peaceful when I nurture my relationship with him. I find it easier to let go of worries knowing he’s there, facing challenges on my behalf. He prioritizes my comfort, often telling me to relax rather than expecting me to assist him. He values my peace, and all I need to do is love him. This is what SHP misses about Taylor’s celebration of Travis’s touchdown.
Celebrating your husband in a youthful, spirited way isn’t embarrassing; it’s simply the foundation of a healthy marriage. Your husband wants to feel admired. He needs acknowledgment for his efforts. When you give him that little affirmation, you might be surprised by the rewards that follow.
