MTV Video Music Awards Highlights
(UPI) — At the MTV Video Music Awards held in Los Angeles on Sunday, Taylor Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia” took home the title of Video of the Year, an event that largely reflected the influence of pop legend Madonna, who earned the Artist of the Year award.
Swift’s video managed to outshine those of other notable nominees, including Ariana Grande’s “hate that i made you love me,” Bruno Mars’ “I Just Might,” GENER8ION’s “STORM” featuring Yung Lean, Madonna’s “Confessions II – The Film,” and Sabrina Carpenter’s “Tears.”
In a heartfelt moment, Swift dedicated her award to the late Dolly Parton, who passed away last month, describing her as “the ultimate showgirl … We were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton.”
Additionally, Swift was honored with the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, a recognition for “groundbreaking music artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling.”
In a fitting inaugural moment, she also premiered the video for her upcoming single “Patient Zero” during the ceremony. This new project, which she directed, features actors Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson, with stunning cinematography by Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki.
Meanwhile, Madonna had her moment in the spotlight, collecting the Artist of the Year award from a total of 11 nominations. Swift had a strong showing as well, with nine nominations, while both Grande and Carpenter received seven each.
Madonna edged out competitors like Swift, Grande, Mars, Morgan Wallen, and Carpenter in a night where she overwhelmingly commanded attention.
The event was hosted by Snoop Dogg at the Peacock Theater, who introduced Madonna, marking her first live VMAs performance in 23 years.
Her performance of “Bring Your Love,” a collaboration with Carpenter, saw her first lying atop a grand piano, joined by Carpenter on the keys before they launched into an energetic dance routine.
Not long after, Madonna secured her first award of the night by winning Best Collaboration with Carpenter for that same song.
A touching highlight of the evening was when country artist Kacey Musgraves honored Parton with a performance of her iconic song “I Will Always Love You,” just a month following the beloved star’s death. Musgraves, who is both a friend and admirer of Parton, also performed a tribute during her concert in Boston on August 28, where she was nominated for Best Country with her song “Dry Spell.”
The award for Best New Artist went to 21-year-old British singer-songwriter Sienna Spiro, known for her powerful and soulful voice and inspired by the essence of 1960s girl groups.
In the Best Pop category, LISA emerged victorious with “Dream” featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi, surpassing competitors like Grande’s “hate that i made you love me,” Charli xcx’s “SS26,” Olivia Rodrigo’s “drop dead,” Carpenter’s “House Tour,” Tate McRae’s “Nobody’s Girl,” and Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia.”
Lastly, the South Korean boy band BTS was awarded Song of the Year for their track “Swim.”
