Taylor Townsend’s Near Miss in Quarterfinals
Taylor Townsend is on the verge of making tennis history, as she’s come tantalizingly close to reaching her first singles grand slam quarterfinal. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be this time around.
The 29-year-old American faced off against Barbora Krejcikova at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Despite holding a solid lead and having eight match points, Townsend ultimately fell short, with a final score of 6-1, 6-7 (13), 3-6.
Krejcikova is set to meet fellow American Jessica Pegula in the next round.
Following a controversial postmatch encounter with Jelena Ostapenko, where heated exchanges occurred, Townsend really captured the attention of the tournament audience.
She enjoyed the backing of a lively American crowd, as is often the case for home players. On Sunday, this support was no different, with nearly every seat at Louis Armstrong Stadium filled with enthusiastic fans.
And did they get a show? Absolutely.
In a mere 28 minutes, Townsend stormed through the first set, showcasing an impressive 93% success rate on her first serves. Initially, she seemed to be struggling a bit, but her performance steadily improved as the second set unfolded.
It wasn’t until the opening game of the second set that Townsend recorded her first double fault of the match.
As the second set progressed, Krejcikova pushed back harder, creating an intense matchup.
With cheers erupting from the crowd, Townsend rallied to force a tiebreaker. However, Krejcikova saved seven match points—three consecutively—before clinching the set.
You could see Townsend start to fade in the third set. Her momentum seemed to wane, and errors crept in.
Krejcikova surged to a 4-2 lead, but Townsend responded with a break in the seventh game, eliciting a thrilled shout of celebration. Despite this, Krejcikova took advantage of her third breakpoint, ultimately securing victory in the final game.
