WNBA Star Speaks Out on Women’s Sports

WNBA player Sophie Cunningham is taking a bold stance on an issue that many Senate Democrats seem hesitant to address. During a recent interview, she voiced her concerns about men competing in women’s sports, expressing a desire to protect young girls in athletics. “I want to protect the young girls in the locker room and the young girls in sports who don’t have to go against biological males,” she stated.

When questioned by the media, Cunningham maintained her position, saying, “I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense.” Interestingly, it seems that a large portion of the American public shares her views. A survey indicates that around 80 percent oppose biological males participating in women’s sports, with 67 percent of Democrats also against it.

American consumers seem to reflect this sentiment. Recently, adidas launched a Cunningham-branded shoe, the Crazy Energy Basketball, which flew off the shelves, selling out by mid-morning on its first day. Despite attempts by some in the media to discredit her, Cunningham continues to stand firm in her beliefs.

Meanwhile, various Senate Democrats persist in promoting views that don’t align with the majority of their constituents. For example, Troy Jackson, a newcomer in the Maine Senate race, has repeatedly voted against measures to protect women’s sports. He once voted against a law that would bar men from competing in girls’ sports and also opposed measures to restrict biological males from women’s locker rooms.

Similarly, Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia, despite voting three times against protecting women’s sports, has co-sponsored a bill that allows men to participate in women’s sports and access their locker rooms. His stance seems contradictory, especially when a significant percentage of Georgians oppose such measures.

In North Carolina, Governor Roy Cooper vetoed the Women’s Sports Fairness Act, framing it as a political maneuver rather than a protective measure for girls, stating that it was “neither fair nor necessary.” He seemed to suggest that political leaders shouldn’t impose decisions on a few vulnerable children.

Despite a majority of support for women’s sports protections, the North Carolina General Assembly overrode Cooper’s veto, indicating a disconnect between the governor’s position and those of constituents. Similarly, Texas representative James Talarico, who has stirred controversy by describing God as “non-binary,” consistently votes against bills banning men from women’s sports, labeling the whole issue a “far-right conspiracy.”

Alaska’s Mary Peltola also opposed a bill aimed at protecting women’s and girls’ sports, dismissing it as “bullying” and “federal overreach,” without acknowledging the harassment many female athletes face when competing against males.

The serious issue recently highlighted in a Supreme Court case, where two high school girls alleged harassment by transgender students, is not a trivial matter. It illustrates the real impact on young female athletes. While many Americans recognize the gravity of these concerns, some Senate Democrats, including Peltola, seem to overlook them.

Cunningham, in contrast, is commendable for taking a stand on this topic and remaining resolute under pressure. It would be beneficial for Democratic senators and candidates to focus on common-sense values that resonate with their constituents.
