Georgia Teacher Charged with Sexual Conduct Involving Student
A high school teacher from Georgia has been accused of engaging in sexual activity with a 16-year-old student. In a disturbing twist, it is claimed that she exchanged a staggering number of sexual messages and even urged her boyfriend to escape to Mexico with her.
Amanda Katz, who taught and later served as a custodian at Roswell High School, appeared in a photo Tuesday, her expression somewhat unsettlingly cheerful, as she was sentenced to potentially 20 years in prison for her inappropriate relationship with the minor.
The student reported to investigators that he engaged in unprotected sexual encounters with the 55-year-old teacher at her home and in the backseat of her car, as detailed in the affidavit.
Katz had notably invited the boy and his family to a Valentine’s Day celebration, where the boy’s mother stumbled upon disturbing emails that unveiled the extent of their inappropriate exchanges.
After the boy’s family left abruptly from their vacation, she returned to work in what colleagues described as a “manic state” and expressed feelings of being “distraught.” Friends mentioned she claimed she couldn’t see her ‘boyfriend’ because her mother was opposed to the relationship.
In the affidavit, police noted, “As I was expressing this, I finally found out that Amanda was, in fact, communicating with a juvenile.”
Investigators uncovered a shocking 19,585 text messages exchanged between Christmas and Valentine’s Day, revealing how Katz expressed her affections for the teenager. In a particularly revealing text, she wrote, “As much as I loved sleeping next to you and hearing you growl, I want you too. I don’t even know if I can hide it.”
In another message, she reflected on her feelings, admitting, “I’m crazy about you… I’ve done a lot of stupid things. A lot. But this is top level.” Katz even remarked that being with him was so important that she would “walk away from everything” for the relationship, contemplating leaving her job.
When the boy distanced himself after her mother discovered the affair, Katz sent frantic messages filled with emotion. “I loved you, and this is the most extreme up, horrible thing that has ever happened to me,” she expressed in a message, also lamenting, “You broke my heart… You abandoned me, not your mother.”
During interviews, the boy shared that he was deeply enamored with Katz, wishing to deepen their relationship, even discussing moving in together. “She had told him that she wanted to go to Mexico with him, but he did not understand why,” the affidavit noted.
Following the allegations, Katz was placed on administrative leave and resigned on April 30. Her bail was set at $25,000.
