In a troubling development, another U.S. teacher faces allegations of sexual misconduct involving students. This time, a 26-year-old elementary school teacher from North Carolina was taken into custody under a fugitive warrant in Dade County, Florida.
Jordan Casey Hawk was arrested earlier this year following an incident that took place while she was teaching in Kannapolis, North Carolina, a city of roughly 60,000 situated about 40 miles northeast of Charlotte.
She has been charged with four counts of indecency with a minor, according to local police.
In a court appearance this week, Hawk opted to waive extradition, indicating she will be sent back to North Carolina within the next 30 days, as reported by South Florida’s NBC6.
Interestingly, it appears that Hawk previously taught at the Miami Lakes AK-8 Center, located about 20 miles northwest of Miami, in a town with a population of around 30,000.
In response to the arrest, Kannapolis City Schools issued a statement.
The district highlighted that Hawk retired in the spring of 2025 and had not worked for them since. Upon discovering concerns regarding her conduct, district officials promptly contacted law enforcement and fully cooperated with the ongoing investigation.
Since this is an active matter, the district is unable to share additional details to protect the privacy of the students involved.
It seems that incidents of sexual misconduct between teachers and students are becoming increasingly frequent, with many of the accused being young women, according to recent reports.
A 2023 article from Psychology Today noted that rates of suspected sexual abuse rose by 53 percent for sexual assault and nearly doubled for rape or attempted rape compared to findings from 2015-2016.
However, it’s important to point out that these statistics are based on official reports, which may not capture the full extent of the issue. Previous research suggested that only about 6% of students felt comfortable reporting instances of sexual misconduct by their educators.
