Teacher Admits to Sexual Relationship with Student
An Australian high school teacher, Carly Rae, age 37, admitted in court on Thursday to having engaged in sexual relations with her 15-year-old student. This confession came eight weeks after she gave birth and followed her initial denial of the accusations.
Last week, Rae appeared in court with her newborn and pleaded guilty to several charges related to child sex offenses, as reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Interestingly, the identity of the baby’s father remains unclear. In a quiet tone, Rae acknowledged having sexual encounters with underage boys at various places in Newcastle, New South Wales, in October 2024, coinciding with when she was arrested for these actions.
During the trial, it was revealed that Rae had been sending flirtatious messages to the victim through Snapchat and Instagram. In one message, she suggested meeting up again before school resumed, promising to bring “some toys.” It’s quite shocking what crossed her mind, really.
At one point, she expressed that contacting the student was “too tempting,” apologizing for removing him from her Snapchat contacts. “I take full responsibility. Do what you want/need,” she responded when prompted about potentially severing their communication.
After her initial arrest, while out on bail, Rae made numerous phone calls to the victim, even attempting to mislead court proceedings, which ultimately resulted in her being arrested again in June. Reports indicate that during one of those calls, the judge criticized her for attempting to sway the victim’s testimony.
The boy shared concerns with his mother about these phone calls, and his cousin, having witnessed their online interactions, also informed his family. It’s just unsettling to think how deeply this affected their lives.
Rae was granted bail again in June due to her pregnancy, which raised eyebrows at the time.
Originally, she was set to stand trial in August 2026 after entering a not guilty plea, but her plea changed after her attorney emphasized her situation as a new mother, prompting a priority review of her case. She has claimed to be unaware that the boy was underage, despite his attendance at her school.
As a consequence of her actions, Rae has lost her job and has been ordered by a judge not to be alone with anyone under the age of 16.
She has pleaded guilty to a range of charges, including sexually abusing a teenage boy, possessing child abuse materials, grooming a child for unlawful sex, and attempting to obstruct justice.
