Teacher Reportedly Approached Officer He Believed to Be a 13-Year-Old Boy

San Jose Vice Principal Arrested in Undercover Sting

A vice principal from San Jose, who has been named a finalist for the 2024 California Teacher of the Year, was arrested recently for allegedly attempting to pay an undercover police officer, posing as a 13-year-old boy, for sex.

Ruben Guzman, 31, who has served as a math teacher and assistant principal at Sunrise Middle School for six years, was taken into custody during a significant online sting operation by the San Jose police on Super Bowl weekend.

It’s worth noting that, in a rather ironic twist, Guzman not only earned recognition as a Teacher of the Year finalist, but he had also been honored by the San Francisco 49ers for his educational achievements.

Authorities released details of the February 3 arrest this week, identifying Guzman as a “potential suspect” through the collaboration of the San Jose Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Unit and the FBI.

According to a statement from the SJPD, Guzman began communication with an individual he believed to be a minor on that night. He acknowledged the child’s age and expressed his desire to engage in sexual acts, even offering money to entice the alleged minor. Arrangements were made for him to meet the supposed 13-year-old in San Jose. However, upon arrival, he was arrested by officers from the SJPD’s Undercover Response Unit.

Authorities later discovered items on his person and in his vehicle that aligned with the planned encounter. The investigation revealed Guzman’s role as an active assistant principal at Sunrise Middle School, prompting school officials to be informed, and they are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

School staff expressed shock at the news of his arrest. Sunrise Principal Teresa Robinson commented, “This is very upsetting, but this is not a reflection of who we are as a school.” She mentioned Guzman was well-respected as both a teacher and an administrator, stating that they found no indications of prior issues in his work history.

The undercover operation that led to the arrest involved an agent posing as a 13-year-old, which is within the age range of Guzman’s middle school students, who typically fall between 11 and 14 years old.

As far as school administration knows, no students at Sunrise Middle School have been harmed. Nonetheless, the SJPD stated that since Guzman was in a position of trust involving children, their detectives suspect there could be additional victims.

The department has urged anyone who may have been affected or has further information to come forward.

Guzman was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on charges of engaging in sexual activity with a minor, although reports suggest he may have been released since then.

Additionally, between February 3 and February 6, a total of ten other men were arrested in this online sting operation. These suspects range in age from 24 to 72 years old.
