Teachers’ union training criticizes Trump administration in uncovered slides

Calls from Republican lawmakers to revoke the NEA's federal charter grow stronger.

NEA Training Under Scrutiny for Political Messaging

The National Education Association (NEA), a significant teachers’ union with around three million members, conducted a training session last month reportedly filled with left-wing political content, drawing attention from a watchdog group. This comes at a time when the union is facing criticism for allegedly placing its political agenda above the interests of students.

On February 23, the NEA hosted an event titled “Advocacy and Free Speech Training for K-12 Educators,” which included slides shared by Defending Education, an organization dedicated to monitoring political messaging in educational settings. These slides presented a variety of liberal viewpoints and criticisms aimed at the Trump administration.

The Department of Education responded by stating that it is “actively addressing civil rights violations” and emphasized the need for educators to protect “vulnerable students.”

One slide from the presentation claims that “democracy itself is at risk” due to what they describe as a troubling effort to “criminalize speech and political dissent.”

Additionally, the training appears to express discontent with the Trump administration’s labeling of Antifa as a terrorist group, featuring slides with headlines like “President Trump Signs Order Targeting Antifa Movement” and suggesting that “the White House’s Use of ‘Domestic Terrorist’ Does Not Match Legal Reality.”

The session also covered adherence to gender pronouns and identities, instructing educators to engage with students based on how they self-identify, even if their identification differs from school records.

Furthermore, the training critiqued actions by Republican-led states, spotlighting issues like bans on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs and punitive measures against students protesting against ICE. There was also mention of legislation in Iowa that threatens teacher licenses if they glorify political violence, asserting, “It’s not just the Trump administration… red state governments are too.”

The presentation provided teachers with scenarios on how to handle potential backlash for displaying Black Lives Matter or Pride flags, encouraging them to challenge institutional policies asking questions like, “Did we have a policy before?” and “Is the policy perspective neutral and applied in a neutral manner?”

Educators were informed that they would receive guidance on their rights to free speech and the potential threats they may face, alongside information on legal protections that might become stronger.

Chloe Hunt, an investigative reporter from Defending Education, remarked to FOX News Digital, “This is not an educator rights training in any way. This is a political framework in the classroom where all Republicans are demonized and conservatives are portrayed as a threat to education.”

In recent months, the NEA has encountered considerable backlash from conservative and parent rights groups, particularly concerning the substantial financial support it has directed toward left-leaning organizations during a time when many students are experiencing declining test scores.

Some NEA staff members have spoken out against the “toxic” political atmosphere within the union. An official, wishing to remain unnamed due to fears of reprisals, described the organization as one strongly aligned with liberal ideology, noting, “This is a cult. 100% a cult. If you don’t have their ideas, you’re the enemy.”
