Team USA is finally receiving Auston Matthews' Olympic excellence just when it matters.

MILAN — Matthews Shines in Knockout Stage

The U.S. national team captain Auston Matthews delivered what might be considered his best offensive performance yet against Germany on Sunday night, showcasing his skills since receiving the “C” on his team jersey.

During the 5-1 victory in Group C at the Santa Giulia Arena, Matthews netted two goals and provided an assist. This was, without a doubt, his strongest outing in the qualifying rounds, and he’s aiming to maintain that momentum for the quarterfinal match on Wednesday against the winner of Sweden vs. Latvia.

“Everything he touched seemed to create a top-notch opportunity,” Matthew Tkachuk remarked. “He’s been exceptional. As our captain, we’re all looking up to him.”

There has been some chatter around Matthews’ earlier struggles scoring during the 4 Nations tournament, which, understandably, still lingers. In the three games leading to the NHL’s pre-Olympic tournament, he registered only three assists.

While Matthews did contribute with goals and assists in those initial games, Brady Tkachuk’s leadership raised questions about who truly leads Team USA.

On Sunday evening, Matthews played a crucial role. He was actively involved, controlling the puck and helping anchor the second line, which made a significant difference in the match.

When head coach Mike Sullivan was asked about Matthews’ impact, he stated, “I think it’s exciting.” He explained that each player has a unique way of coaching. Matthews, being more reserved, leads by example through his gameplay. Sullivan noted, “His talent is clear, but he also excels in the little things, particularly his underrated defensive efforts. His commitment to defense is impressive, and he brings a physical edge to his game. His goals near the net are perfect examples of that, along with his ability to make pivotal plays, like our first goal.”

“So, his performance tonight truly inspires the team. Everyone knows what he’s capable of; he’s an elite player, one of the best globally. His commitment to both offensive and defensive sides of the game tonight is certainly motivating for the entire group,” he added.

If the U.S. wants to keep pace with Canada’s formidable offense, they’ll need a goal-oriented Matthews.

This is the impression the California native aimed to leave for the knockout stage.

“He was fantastic throughout the tournament,” Jake Guentzel commented. “Honestly, the criticism he faces seems unfounded. He’s an incredible player and can perform in any situation.”
