USA Women’s Hockey Team Shines in Quarterfinals

The USA women’s hockey team continued its impressive performance, achieving a 6-0 win against Italy during the quarterfinals at the Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena on Friday. This victory secures their spot in the Olympic semifinals.

Going into this crucial single-elimination match, Team USA had already dominated, scoring 20 goals and allowing just one in four games, which included a notable 5-0 shutout against Team Canada.

The match against Italy saw Team USA maintain its strong momentum. This was their fourth consecutive shutout, extending the team’s streak to an impressive 271 minutes without allowing a goal.

USA’s first goal came in a moment of chaos when both teams were down to four players due to penalties. Alex Carpenter cleanly won a faceoff against Megan Keller, who then quickly passed to Laila Edwards, and back again to Keller. With a one-timer, she found the back of the net, putting Team USA ahead 1-0.

In the first period, Team USA showed overwhelming dominance, outscoring Italy 20-2. Italian goaltender Gabriella Durante made a remarkable save just before the period ended, deflecting a close shot from Abby Murphy with her stick.

Italy nearly got on the board in the first period when Justin Reyes broke through but was thwarted by USA goalie Gwyneth Phillips, who stood tall.

The Americans doubled their score just 1:41 into the second period with a sharp-angled shot from Kendall Coyne Schofield, who banked a rebound off the end boards and into the net past Durante.

Coyne Schofield wasn’t done yet. Following a beautiful passing play by Britta Carle, she scored again on a slick toe-drag move, leaving Grace Zumwinkle in front of Durante to make it 3-0.

Edwards soon increased the lead, scoring two goals in a rapid span of 3.5 minutes. Her first came from threading a shot through a crowd in front of Durante, pushing the score to 4-0.

Despite being on the verge of a penalty kill because of a boarding call against Rory Gilday, Team USA managed to score again, marking their fifth goal of the game.

The American squad scored five times within 25 minutes, matching Italy’s total goals throughout the entire game. Hanna Birka sealed the sixth goal following a crafty pass from Taylor Heise, but tension escalated afterwards—punches were thrown, and heated exchanges erupted between both teams’ coaches.

By the end of the second period, Team USA had outscored Italy 39-4. No additional goals were scored in the third period, with Team USA finishing with a remarkable 51-6 advantage overall.

Next, Team USA will face their semifinal opponents on Monday at 10:40 a.m. ET.
