Team USA's Olympic hockey champions come together as Jack Hughes' Devils acquire goalie Connor Hellebuyck in a major move

US hockey teams celebrated at White House after historic gold medal victories

The US Olympic hockey teams were honored for their remarkable achievement of winning gold medals. Both the men’s and women’s squads triumphed over Canada, with the men’s victory capped by a nail-biting overtime goal from Jack Hughes and an impressive 41 saves by MVP Connor Hellebuyck. Meanwhile, women’s team stars Abbey Murphy and Joy Dunne were acknowledged for their significant contributions during their championship journey.

Interestingly, Team USA’s two Olympic stars have now become teammates in the NHL. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck, who made 41 saves in the gold medal match against Canada, has been traded to the New Jersey Devils. He will join Jack Hughes, who scored that crucial overtime goal.

Hellebuyck and Hughes were instrumental in securing the United States’ first Olympic gold medal in hockey since the famed Miracle on Ice in 1980.

The transfer process for Hellebuyck was quite dramatic, especially after he publicly requested a move from the Winnipeg Jets back in September. This led to a suspension when he didn’t report to training camp, which not only affected his payments but also stirred up quite a bit of controversy.

In terms of the trade, the Devils provided the Jets with center Dawson Mercer, goalie Nico Daws, prospect Alexander Command, forward Nick Bjugstad, and draft picks in exchange for Hellebuyck.

Before Hellebuyck’s arrival, the Devils’ goaltending had been lackluster, ranking 23rd in the league in save percentage. Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner and the NHL’s MVP for the 2024-25 season, brings significant experience to the team. After winning the gold medal, he and Hughes were also present for the State of the Union address, where President Donald Trump announced Hellebuyck would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

With a solid record of 345 wins, Hellebuyck sits 27th on the all-time NHL wins list and is fifth among U.S.-born players. His .916 save percentage ranks fourth among American goalies with over 300 career starts, showcasing his impressive abilities and career.
