Historic Win for U.S. Men’s Hockey Team
The U.S. men’s hockey team has carved a notable place in both sports history and television viewership with their latest triumph on the ice. Their 2-1 overtime win against Canada on Sunday stood as the most-watched sporting event in the U.S. before 9 a.m. ET, as reported by NBC Sports.
This game drew an average of 20.7 million viewers overall, with 18.6 million tuning in live from 8:15 a.m. to 11 a.m. on NBC and its streaming service, Peacock. The excitement peaked when Jack Hughes scored the game-winning goal, sending viewership soaring to 26 million.
Notably, this match became the second most-viewed hockey game in NBC Sports history, trailing only the 2010 Vancouver Olympic men’s gold medal game where Canada edged out the U.S. 3-2 in overtime.
The intense gold-medal matchup also attracted 3.7 million viewers, making it the most-streamed game on Peacock and NBC Sports apart from NFL broadcasts.
After their exhilarating victory, the team celebrated at the renowned E11even nightclub in Miami, having flown in from Milan. Following the festivities, they were welcomed at the White House to meet President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.
During the State of the Union address, President Trump acknowledged the team’s accomplishment, announcing that goaltender Connor Hellebuyck would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his impressive performance during the game.
Additionally, the U.S. women’s hockey team, who also bested Canada in overtime to secure their gold medal, is slated to visit the White House soon.
