Teamsters leader expresses gratitude to Trump for tariff on imported films

Teamsters President Sean M. O’Brien and film director Lindsay Dorgerty have expressed their support for President Donald Trump’s proposal to implement 100% tariffs on films made outside the United States.

In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump stated that “the American film industry is dying very quickly.” He emphasized that other nations are offering various incentives that lure filmmakers and studios away from the U.S.

Trump mentioned that plans for these tariffs are underway, citing collaboration with the Commerce Department and U.S. trade representatives. He declared intentions to “immediately begin the process” of instituting the tariffs on films produced abroad.

Teamsters representatives commended Trump for his proposal, referencing years of struggles within Hollywood that have hampered American union members’ work opportunities. They noted how studios have often prioritized corporate interests over those of local workers.

O’Brien specifically praised Trump’s approach, stating gratitude for his support of union jobs when others remain indifferent. The statement emphasized the need to counteract the trend of outsourcing jobs and acknowledged the willingness to collaborate with any elected officials committed to supporting American workers.

In light of this, the union sees this moment as an opportunity to advocate for more film production within the U.S., helping to foster domestic employment in the industry.

O’Brien also criticized certain Hollywood leaders for their focus on profitability over creativity and remarked on the reflexive opposition from Democrats toward Trump’s agenda, suggesting that their responses are often more about party lines than the actual policies at hand.

In a broader perspective, O’Brien highlighted the importance of revitalizing American manufacturing, which he believes will create jobs and career paths for many who may not pursue higher education. He insisted that regardless of political affiliation, there is a shared interest in promoting U.S. jobs and fostering domestic economic opportunities.
