Tech Leaders Think 'Code Shapes Culture'

Conservative Perspectives on AI and Its Narrative Battle

Washington – Winton Hall, who serves as the Social Media Director for Breitbart News and is the author of an upcoming book titled Code Red: Left, Right, China, and the Competition to Control AI, emphasized the importance of conservatives establishing a foothold in the artificial intelligence (AI) space during a panel discussion titled “AI and The American Soul” at the National Conservatism Conference. He highlighted that, while conservatives have a clear stance on many issues, they lack a cohesive strategy regarding AI.

Hall pointed out that when discussing conservative values—like pro-life and national security—the conversation doesn’t quite translate into the AI domain. He referenced a quote from Andrew Breitbart, asserting that “politics is downstream from culture,” adding that tech elites seem to believe that “the code is upstream from culture.” This indicates a belief that those who control technology can shape societal narratives in significant ways.

According to Hall, AI has become a formidable political instrument rather than merely a tool. He believes its influence reaches nearly every policy area, ranging from education to national security, and even economics.

He delved into three main issues: the ongoing narrative battle over AI, the emergence of “Agent AI” (which operates with minimal human oversight), and the concept of “fractal truth” as a means to navigate AI’s complexities. Hall highlighted experiments by OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, suggesting that such AI models might soon be adopted on a larger scale, impacting fundamental human motivations.

Hall raised concerns about the implications of Altman’s vision for society, particularly the risk of undermining work ethics that many people hold dear. He questioned the long-term consequences of a societal shift where work is deemed outdated, and reliance on technology is seen as progress.

He expressed particular worry over a lack of awareness among conservatives at the grassroots level about AI’s potential impacts. Hall warned that current attitudes often dismiss AI as simply another phase of automation, but he believes this time is different, with influential leaders in tech asserting that AI will create unprecedented challenges.

Hall cautioned that those raising families face tough choices as the left frames job displacement from AI as both immediate and inevitable. He believes conversations about AI’s potential and pitfalls are more critical now than ever.

In closing, Hall offered five key insights for conservatives. The first is the notion that we’re entering a “Code Red Era” concerning AI, signaling an urgent need for a unified conservative stance. He called for a realization that engaging with AI is not just about adapting to change but understanding the breadth of its societal impacts.

Second, he stressed that children should be educated to create jobs, rather than simply seeking them, and emphasized this is essential in a future dominated by AI. He noted that white-collar jobs are increasingly at risk, urging a shift in perspective on what constitutes work.

Third, Hall identified government bureaucracy as a significant threat in an AI-driven world, pointing to the dangers of algorithms and cancel culture. Fourth, he remarked on the brutal efficiencies that younger workers will need to navigate as they adapt to rapid changes in the job market.

Despite these challenges, Hall believes conservatives can still prevail in the AI narrative struggle, though time is of the essence. He warned that if the left dominates the conversation, the consequences could lead to a loss of individuality and freedom in American society.

In a final reflection, he advocated for visualizing the current situation, comparing it to the political landscape where rapid changes occur. “Everyday people must understand where we are now,” he concluded, suggesting that this moment calls for a greater awareness and action in shaping the future of AI.
