LIV Golf’s Mexico City Tournament Faces Major Hurdles
The LIV Golf tournament in Mexico City began on a rocky note.
Following a Wednesday filled with chatter about the potential collapse of the Rebel League, the first round on Thursday experienced significant broadcasting problems.
Just moments before the tournament was set to kick off, I received a frustrating message: “Please wait, we are experiencing technical issues.” Then, the screen went dark.
These streaming issues emerged roughly ten minutes after the initial tee time at 3:15 p.m. ET on Thursday and continued for over an hour as of the latest update.
This weekend’s chaotic tournament, spanning over 24 hours, clearly didn’t unfold as LIV Golf had envisioned.
Just a day before, executives from LIV were reportedly called to an emergency meeting in New York amid persistent rumors concerning the circuit backed by Saudi Arabia.
The Financial Times indicated that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund may be considering withdrawing financial support for LIV, which has been a disruptive force in the golf world since its inception nearly five years ago.
Golf journalist Ryan French announced on Wednesday that a major revelation about the potential “shutdown” of LIV Golf would be forthcoming.
French added that there were significant issues at play: “The players didn’t get paid today, the power went out because their bills weren’t paid, the employees didn’t get paid. Things like that. There’s definitely a lot going on… things are not good.”
In response, LIV Golf’s CEO, Scott O’Neill, attempted to quell the rumors regarding the company’s potential downfall. He reassured staff via email that the 2026 season would proceed “exactly as planned, uninterrupted and at full throttle.”
The breakaway tour has generated considerable buzz over recent years, drawing notable players like Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, and Phil Mickelson with lucrative contracts and condensed tournaments.
Nonetheless, recent departures, such as Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed returning to the PGA Tour, have revealed underlying issues within LIV Golf.
