Sen. Ted Cruz Critiques CNN Fact Check on Afghan Refugees

On Thursday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) addressed a 2021 CNN fact check that described concerns about Afghan refugee vetting as “misleading.” He and other conservatives have disagreed with the Biden administration’s confidence in the vetting process of Operation Welcoming Allies, especially after a tragic incident last week where a former Afghan refugee allegedly shot two soldiers from the West Virginia National Guard, resulting in one death.

“As we’ve seen repeatedly, there’s a coalition of Democrats, journalists, and so-called experts pushing a narrative that promotes a single ideology,” Cruz remarked. “In 2021, they constructed a false narrative to obscure the Biden administration’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, which resulted in the admission of countless displaced individuals into our country,” he told a news outlet.

He further claimed that the Biden administration’s actions could invite terrorism. Cruz had previously raised alarms about the potential risks associated with the unvetted entry of Afghans into the U.S., expressing serious concerns over the adequacy of the vetting process.

“At the time, I stated that not vetting evacuees was not just neglectful; it was, frankly, a risk for child trafficking and terrorism,” Cruz added. “Biden officials chose to go after me rather than address the actual issues at hand, putting Americans in jeopardy due to their policies and the subsequent cover-ups.”

These sentiments came to light following a renewed discussion over security screenings conducted for Afghan refugees. A 2021 CNN fact check insisted that Afghan evacuees were, in fact, screened by intelligence, law enforcement, and counterterrorism experts.

Concerns Over Failed Vetting Procedures

Reports surfaced about an Afghan refugee, previously charged with serious crimes, being apprehended under Immigration and Customs Enforcement regulations. A senior DHS official attributed the spike in attacks to the Biden administration’s insufficient vetting process for refugees.

Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin contended that, due to what she called a “trust without verification” approach, thousands of Afghans were allowed entry without proper background checks. This situation raises pressing questions regarding the safety implications associated with the vetting practices for refugees admitted under the Biden administration.

The ongoing discourse illustrates the tension between differing narratives surrounding the vetting of Afghan refugees and the consequences arising from them. The complexities and risks tied to the refugee policy remain topics of vivid debate.
