Teddi Mellencamp Discusses Impact of Cancer on Speech
Teddi Mellencamp recently opened up about the toll her cancer treatment has taken on her body and her ability to communicate. The 44-year-old star of “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” shared that she’s been facing challenges with her speech as she navigates her stage 4 cancer diagnosis.
“Sometimes, my words feel a bit stuttery. That doesn’t mean I’m lying,” Mellencamp expressed during her appearance on the “Jamie Kahn Lima Show” podcast. She highlighted how treatment can affect not just physical health but also expression.
Importance of Medical Monitoring
Mellencamp pointed out that after undergoing surgeries, some individuals may need to relearn how to speak. “I’m really grateful that I can still communicate to some extent, but there are day-to-day struggles,” she noted. “Some days, it feels like I’m just stumbling over my words.” This has led to her concerns about how viewers might perceive her if she returns to television.
She admitted, “Part of me worries that people won’t think I’m being honest when, in reality, I’m just having a tough time.” That kind of pressure can be heavy, especially in the spotlight.
Future on Reality Television
While she hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility of returning to reality TV, Mellencamp mentioned she’s taking a pause for now. “I don’t believe it’s the right time for either me or the cast right now,” she said.
Diagnosed earlier this year, Mellencamp’s cancer has unfortunately spread to her brain and lungs. Currently, she’s undergoing surgery, immunotherapy, and radiation treatments. Reflecting on her journey, she candidly shared her greatest fear – the prospect of death.
Concerns About Loneliness
As she manages her health issues, Mellencamp is also dealing with personal changes. Her divorce from Edwin Arroyave, which had been underway, is on hold as they navigate this difficult time together. “I fear feeling alone,” she admitted, although she acknowledged that she has solid support from friends and family.
While her relationship with Arroyave has faced challenges, she expressed a desire to maintain a positive dynamic for the sake of their three children, Slate and Cruz.
Mellencamp filed for divorce in November 2024 after 13 years of marriage. Yet, amidst this turbulence, she remains hopeful and focused on her recovery.
