Tragic Shooting of Uber Driver in Lawrenceville
A 15-year-old boy has been charged with murder as an adult following the fatal shooting of an Uber driver in a carjacking incident that occurred on New Year’s Day in a suburban area of Atlanta.
The Lawrenceville Police have identified the victim as 58-year-old Cesar Tejada from Grayson, Georgia, who was working as an Uber driver at the time. Tejada was reportedly a father of two.
Authorities responded to calls around 5:20 a.m. on January 1 about an individual lying in the road in Lawrenceville, located about 30 miles northeast of Atlanta. Upon arrival, officers found Tejada with gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators discovered that Tejada had picked up the suspect at approximately 4:13 a.m., taking him to Groveland Parkway. After shooting Tejada, the suspect exited the vehicle, left him in the street, and fled the scene.
Using camera technology and collaboration with Uber, detectives tracked Tejada’s vehicle back to its starting point. The police later spotted the suspect, identified as Christian Simmons, walking near his home and took him into custody.
Simmons, who was not initially named due to his age, has now been charged with murder as an adult.
An Uber spokesperson expressed sorrow over Tejada’s death, stating, “We are heartbroken by this devastating loss and extend our condolences to the driver’s family at this incredibly difficult time.” The company is reportedly cooperating with the investigation and has banned the passenger accounts associated with the incident.
Furthermore, Uber is enhancing its safety features, offering options like an emergency assistance button, GPS tracking, and passenger authentication to prevent future occurrences.
Law enforcement has characterized Tejada as a devoted husband and father, and they have extended their sympathies to his family. The investigation is still active, and anyone with relevant information is encouraged to reach out to the Lawrenceville Police Department.
