Tragic Shooting Claims Life of Cheerleader in Alabama

A high school cheerleader tragically died from severe brain injuries after being shot at a party in Alabama.

Kimber Mills, 18, was fatally shot early Sunday morning in a wooded area known as The Pit in Pinson, Alabama. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported that the suspect, Steven Tyler Whitehead, 27, arrived around 12:24 a.m. and opened fire following an argument and physical altercation. This incident occurred during a bonfire.

Whitehead faces three counts of attempted murder and is currently held on a $180,000 bail.

Ashley Mills, Kimber’s sister, recounted that no one knew Whitehead beforehand. She explained how a confrontation between one of Kimber’s friends and her boyfriend escalated into violence that led to gunfire.

Ashley described Kimber as someone who was caught in the crossfire, adding the unfortunate nature of the incident.

Kimber was a senior at Cleveland High School, where she cheered and ran track. Her sister publicly announced Kimber’s death on Facebook, sharing, “Our sweet little sister went to be with the Lord last night at 7:08 p.m.! She was and is loved by so many. We will miss Kimber!”

Kimber had plans to attend the University of Alabama in 2026, his aspirations centered around becoming a nurse.

Ashley revealed that Kimber’s injuries were overwhelming. A tribute walk was organized, highlighting the support from those who loved her. “She has so much trauma in her brain,” Ashley shared. “To bring her back, we’re already making preparations for her to become an organ donor because that’s what she wanted.”

Trussville Police Chief Eric Rush confirmed that Kimber sustained gunshot wounds to her head and leg and was rushed to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. Three others also suffered injuries during the shooting.

Riley Silbo, a friend of Kimber’s, expressed a desire to remember her for her vibrant personality rather than the circumstances of her death. “I would rather be known for her upbeat personality and big smile than for her tragedy,” she said, reflecting on the joy Kimber brought to many lives.
