Shark Attack Leaves Boy in Critical Condition at Sydney Beach

A 13-year-old boy is in critical condition following a shark attack at a beach near Sydney Harbor. His quick-thinking friend is being hailed as a hero for jumping into the water to save him.

According to NSW Police Superintendent Joseph McNulty, the incident occurred around 4:20 PM local time on Sunday while the boy was jumping on rocks. The shark involved is reported to be quite large, prompting immediate medical concerns.

Mr. McNulty commended the bravery of the boy’s friends, who not only ventured into the risky waters but also assisted in bringing him back to safety. “Those young men are incredibly brave given the situation,” he noted, adding that the injuries they witnessed were severe. There seems to be an unbreakable bond among them, which is quite touching.

A police boat arrived shortly after, and officers swiftly applied tourniquets to the unconscious boy’s legs while performing CPR. He was rushed to receive medical care.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with reports of the boy being “covered in blood” by the time help arrived.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Giles Buchanan mentioned that the medical team intubated the boy and took over his breathing, ensuring blood circulation was maintained, and he might have received a blood transfusion en route to the hospital. “It was a tense situation,” Buchanan commented.

The boy underwent surgery later that night, and authorities are now trying to identify the type of shark involved in the attack. They suspect it might be a bull shark, which is known to frequent Sydney Harbor during January and February. McNulty suggested that a mix of different water conditions might have contributed to creating a conducive environment for such an attack.
