Teen driver crashes into parked car, resulting in death of Nobu sushi chef in Malibu

Tragic Accident Claims Sushi Chef’s Life

A chef, who had been with Nobu Malibu in California for many years, lost his life when a teenage driver crashed into his parked car while he was sleeping inside it.

Ryo Uchimiya, aged 51, was a seasoned sushi chef, celebrated for his work at the prominent Japanese restaurant for a quarter of a century, as reported by KTLA.

On Saturday morning, just before his shift began, Uchimiya had parked along the curb and dozed off in his car. At approximately 6:50 a.m., a 16-year-old boy crashed his Range Rover into the rear of Uchimiya’s parked sedan.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department indicated that the young driver seemed to be speeding when he slammed into Uchimiya’s vehicle. Investigators noted no signs of intoxication on the teenager’s part.

The case is still under investigation, and it is uncertain if the teen will face charges.

According to the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office, Uchimiya suffered “multiple blunt force injuries” and the cause of death was ruled an accident.

Surveillance footage captured the moment when the SUV collided with Uchimiya’s car, creating a domino effect that impacted two other vehicles parked in front of his.

A witness relayed to KTLA that the teenage driver appeared bewildered and shocked following the accident.

Some reports suggested the driver might not even have a valid license. One person commented, reflecting that he seemed very young and confused, while also noting that his parents did not arrive at the scene, leaving him there alone for about two hours.

Residents and workers in the vicinity mentioned that the stretch of Pacific Coast Highway, where the tragic incident occurred, is known for its dangerous driving conditions, with many drivers often exceeding speed limits. In fact, the Malibu City Council had previously declared a local emergency due to hazardous circumstances on PCH, especially after a high-speed crash claimed the lives of four students from Pepperdine University weeks earlier.

Uchimiya’s friends, family, and colleagues remember him fondly as a cherished husband, father, and talented chef, according to KTLA.

The manager at Nobu expressed that the restaurant’s “family of staffers” is working earnestly to support Uchimiya’s family during this trying time.

“It’s obviously been a very difficult day for so many people,” the manager stated.

A fellow chef from Nobu described Uchimiya as a “real nice guy” and a “very talented chef,” expressing sadness over the tragic loss.

“He was just getting some rest before a catering gig,” the chef shared. “We usually arrive pretty early.” Another hostess mentioned that the team is still coming to terms with the situation, saying, “We’re not ready to talk about it now. We all need time.”
