A 16-year-old girl was killed and her 8-year-old sister was seriously injured after being struck by a hit-and-run truck driver in a crosswalk in Queens on Wednesday afternoon, police and officials said.
According to NYPD Traffic Chief Philip Rivera, the siblings were crossing the intersection of 47th Street and 46th Street in Woodside around 3:30 p.m. when a driver plowed into them.
Police say the sisters were in a crosswalk when they were struck.
Authorities said the driver of a white Lady Refresh delivery truck fled the scene but was stopped a block away.
Police sources said the girl died at the scene in front of IS125, where her younger sister also attends.
The 8-year-old boy was taken by paramedics to Cornell Medical Center in critical condition with a leg injury.
Their “inconsolable” mother broke down in tears at the intersection.
“Her eyes were popping out. She’s alive, but it looked like she’d lost a part of herself,” said 15-year-old Justin Castillo, who witnessed the aftermath.
“The poor girl was very young. Her backpack was right next to her,” he added.

“It was hard to watch my mother. She was acting tough but it was clear to see she was losing her mind.”
Rivera said the driver is in police custody and has not yet been charged.
