The recent controversy surrounding WNBA player Sophie Cunningham’s advocacy for women in sports seems to have escalated, particularly after two teenage girls displayed signs at a game in Seattle. During a match between Cunningham’s Indiana Fever and the Seattle Storm, the girls held up a sign that stated: “Thank you Sophie for speaking up for girls!” They wore shirts from an athletic brand, XX-XY, known for its stance against biological males competing in women’s sports.
One of the teens explained to journalist Brandi Kruse that they weren’t trying to instigate a political statement, but were simply there to support Cunningham. However, they were confronted by an older woman who told them, “Jesus loves everyone,” and made derogatory remarks, referring to them as “fucking crazy.”
Kruse shared a video of her interview with the girls outside the Seattle Storm Arena. She later identified the woman involved as Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton. One of the teenagers mentioned feeling upset, especially since Keaton is also a woman, and added that the whole experience felt quite overwhelming for them. The girls felt they weren’t being disrespectful; rather, they were just expressing their support.
The team acknowledged the incident in a statement from major shareholder Ginny Gilder, who expressed regret that the situation occurred. “Everyone who attends a Storm game should feel welcome,” she emphasized, reiterating their commitment to an inclusive environment.
Reflecting on the experience, one of the teens commented, “Maybe we don’t have so much hate, and perhaps people should aim to be kinder, even through disagreements.” She asserted that they acted respectfully, and that differing opinions should not lead to hostility.
Kruse stated she would pursue further investigation into the matter, sharing her perspective that those who often preach love and inclusion can sometimes reveal their more intolerant sides. Meanwhile, the Fever defeated the Storm, finishing the game at 105-95.
