Staten Island Teen Accused of Gruesome Murder
A Staten Island teenager, Damian Herstel, stands accused of decapitating his mother’s boyfriend, a crime that has left many in shock. According to police, the 19-year-old allegedly went so far as to scoop out the victim’s brain with a spoon and put it in a blender. What did he plan to do with it? That’s still unclear.
Herstel reportedly confessed to stabbing and beheading his mother’s live-in partner, Anthony Casaraspro, during an incident at their home on Cary Avenue in West Brighton on October 6. Officials say that the scene was troubling, with images showing the 45-year-old victim’s body and a spoon left carelessly beside his severed head.
Right now, Herstel faces charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter, and weapon possession. Earlier this week, he was moved from a hospital to Rikers Island Jail. His attorney, Mark Fonte, expressed that their initial meeting was “horrifying.” She noted that he seemed to struggle with distinguishing between reality and fantasy, saying, “He had no idea what actually happened.” Herstel has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
When Fonte asked Herstel about ending up in the hospital, he mentioned something about being in a fight. “I remember punching him in the face, but I don’t know if that actually happened,” he reportedly said, revealing his confusion over what’s real and what he might have imagined.
Herstel’s mother, Alicia Zayas, 39, shared that after the incident, he showed his sister the bloody aftermath and even asked her if she wanted their mom to be alive. Zayas recounted her daughter’s reaction: “She said, ‘Are you going to hurt your mom?'” to which Herstel responded, “Do you want her to be alive?” It’s all incredibly disturbing.
After Zayas returned home on that fateful day, she stumbled upon the gruesome scene. She noted that Casaraspro had tried to help Herstel in the past, even taking him fishing. It seems there were attempts at connection, but their outcome was tragically different.
Herstel has a history of hallucinations that began when he was only 13, during which he drew pictures illustrating the frightening visions he experienced. This led to him being prescribed antipsychotic medication for the first time. Zayas stated she noticed a change in his behavior, especially after his medication was altered without her being informed—an alarming issue that doctors have not clarified due to patient confidentiality.
It’s a chaotic situation, filled with darkness and confusion. Herstel’s mental health struggles seem to contribute heavily to the incident, but it’s hard to wrap one’s mind around the details. The whole community feels shaken up by this tragic event, and while answers may emerge, the pain left in its wake is palpable.
