A 17-year-old boy has been accused of murdering his mother and younger brother in what authorities describe as a disturbing case linked to his use of ChatGPT to develop “fantasy stories” about killing his family.
Arjun Aravind faces charges for the deaths of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and brother, Siddharth Aravind, 14, who were found dead at their home in Acton, Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, as reported by the authorities.
Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan noted that the high school student exhibited “concerning behavior” prior to the incident, including his use of an AI chatbot to produce “theoretical ideas and fantasy stories concerning the murder of his family.”
According to Ryan, Aravind had reportedly sought help from ChatGPT to craft a dark “gothic novel-like story.” The mother and brother were discovered around 6:30 PM after their father contacted the police, mentioning the tutor’s presence was no longer welcome in their home.
The father stated that his last conversation with his wife occurred early in the day before he left for work, while Siddharth was last seen around noon that same day.
Upon investigation, police found Siddharth dead on the first floor and his mother in the basement of their home.
Aravind reportedly fled the scene in his mother’s 2014 green Honda Accord, prompting authorities to alert nearby police forces.
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, law enforcement in Wayland found the Accord parked outside a store with Aravind inside.
He was taken into custody without any trouble.
“This is an indescribable tragedy,” remarked Ryan.
The medical examiner’s office will determine the official causes of death for the victims.
Authorities have not disclosed whether any weapons, such as firearms, were involved.
Aravind has been charged with two counts of murder, two counts of assault and battery against a family member, two counts of assault and battery, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and motor vehicle theft.
He is scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday afternoon in Lowell Juvenile Court, followed by more serious murder charges in Concord District Court on Thursday.
