Teen Gatherings in Chicago Raise Concerns

Recently, Chicago saw hundreds of young people take to the streets, prompting Mayor Brandon Johnson to label it a “teen trend” with potentially dangerous consequences.

Footage obtained showed groups of teens crowding around cars and moving through intersections on March 30. Other clips captured scenes of dancing, socializing, and even brief altercations among attendees.

Residents in Hyde Park noted that this takeover continued well into the night, lasting until midnight.

One local, Jason Hale, mentioned that his vehicle was one of about 30 damaged during the gathering. “It’s a mess here. There’s a thousand dollars worth of damage—dents and footprints everywhere,” he said.

As the crowd grew, some teens were seen climbing on parked cars. In response, police confirmed that they issued three curfew violations tied to the event, and a 16-year-old girl faced charges for possessing a weapon and disorderly conduct.

The city officials noted that these events are becoming more common, often organized via social media, drawing larger numbers to various neighborhoods like downtown and Hyde Park.

Mayor Johnson issued a public announcement urging parents to keep their kids from joining these increasingly popular gatherings. “We’re tracking five trends this weekend, and we need parents’ help. Please check on your children and ensure they don’t get involved in these activities,” he stated. “They can be dangerous and even deadly.” He also mentioned that police will enforce the city’s 10 p.m. curfew.

Some residents are growing increasingly worried about the impact these gatherings have on safety and community life. Hale, reflecting on the incident, said it made him reconsider his future in the city. “Parents should guide their kids better; it’s concerning to see them running wild like this,” he remarked.
