Teen Was Raped and Stabbed 59 Times. Killer Arrested After 43 Years.

A man has been sentenced to life in prison, over 40 years after he raped and stabbed 15-year-old Karen Stitt 59 times in a California city. Gary Ramirez, now 78, faced trial based on DNA evidence linking him to the 1982 murder and assault of Stitt in Sunnyvale, California.

Judge Hanley Chu imposed a life sentence, allowing no chance for parole after 25 years. Ramirez entered an uncontested plea regarding the 1982 murder on February 24.

Stitt’s case lingered unresolved for decades, but in 2022, detectives focused on Ramirez, leading to the evidence needed for prosecution.

On the night of the murder in September 1982, Stitt had traveled about ten miles from her home in Palo Alto to meet her boyfriend. Later, around midnight, she returned to the bus stop at the intersection of Wolfrod and El Camino.

The following morning, her lifeless body was discovered roughly 100 yards from the bus stop, near a bloody cinderblock wall. She had suffered 59 stab wounds and had been sexually assaulted, with the assailant’s blood found at the scene.

According to reports, her boyfriend expressed regret for leaving her, fearing he might get in trouble for being out late.

A DNA profile created in 2000 excluded Stitt’s boyfriend as a suspect. However, in April 2022, authorities identified Ramirez as a likely source of the fluids found at the crime scene, a finding later confirmed by the Santa Clara County DA’s Crime Institute.

The district attorney’s office noted that the successful resolution of the case was due to persistent detective work and efforts over many years.

“Karen Stitt was taken from us over 40 years ago, but she has never been forgotten,” stated District Attorney Jeff Rosen. He added, “Thanks to our crime lab, relentless prosecutors, and dedicated detectives, we have finally brought the perpetrator to justice.”

Relatives and friends of Stitt attended the verdict hearing, expressing their ongoing grief and anger over this horrific crime, underscoring that she remains in their hearts.
